DC Engagement, National Arboretum - 7 reasons why I include an engagement session in all my wedding packages
I’m a sucker for couples sessions- especially for my wedding clients. I’ll use this spring session from the KENILWORTH PARK & AQUATIC GARDENS & NATIONAL ARBORETUM in Washington, DC to share some reasons why:
It gets you more comfortable in front of the camera (even if it's just a teeny bit!) so that when it comes time for your wedding day, you'll know what to expect out of the portrait session, and photos will be a breeze. You’ll get familiar with how I work, and maybe get some ideas for certain photos you really loved that you want to recreate or perfect on the wedding day.
It gives us all a chance to get to know each other in the flesh before the big day, so it feels like I'm another friend at your wedding rather than a total stranger.
It provides you with more casual portraits of the two of you, compared to the more formal photos from the wedding. Most people feel a little more “them” in the engagement photos because it captures them on an average day. You’ll probably find it’s more likely that you’ll want to print your engagement photos and hang them on the wall, while reserving the wedding photos for your album.
It's an awesome opportunity to visit a place that's important to you both, or an excuse to adventure to a new place you've been meaning to check out. I love it when couple’s choose a place that has special significance to their relationship- like their favorite park to walk through on their days off together, or the beach they go to in the summers, or the trails they hike in the fall. You’ll already know the area, so you’ll feel comfortable and maybe even have some photo ideas/spots of your own. It also will make them that much more meaningful, looking back on them years from now.
You can choose to have the engagement shoot in a different season/time of year than the wedding to get even more variety. If you’re getting married in the spring while all the flowers are in bloom, maybe consider a fall engagement session to show off the foliage of that time of year.
It gives us ample time to explore and have fun with it, rather than feeling like we have to stick to a strict timeline like on the wedding day. We can take chances, experiment, and chat along the way.
If you book it far enough ahead of time, you can use the photos for save-the-dates, or a fun party favor or guest book!
