Backyard Wedding South Shore, Boston - Brittany & John

Brittany and John had a sunny backyard wedding just steps from the beach at their family home on the South Shore of Boston in Scituate, MA. It's one of my favorite kinds of weddings- super personal & sentimental, and set in beautiful natural surroundings. Their dog Birdie definitely stole the show- and I am NOT apologizing for how many puppy pictures made it into this blog post!

Both of them grew up in the Boston area & met through mutual friends. They moved out to Chicago for work opportunities a couple years ago, so the wedding was an awesome opportunity for a friend & family reunion- especially considering the place holds a special place in so many of their hearts.

The home has been in Brittany's mom's family for 3 generations, and Brittany and her siblings & cousins all spent summers on the beach growing up. Brittany's Uncle lives there now, and mentioned in his welcome speech that they've been dreaming of hosting one of the kid's weddings on the property, and was so honored when Brittany approached him about planning her wedding with John.

While Brittany got ready with her bridesmaids (and one bridesman!) John got ready with his groomsmen nearby at the INN AT SCITUATE HARBOR. Somewhat non-traditionally, we actually ended up using the master bathroom for Brittany to get into dress her because the light was absolutely gorgeous! I love shooting in places that aren't necessarily designed for weddings- we weren't constricted to a specific bridal suite, and we didn't have to worry about random venue staff or visitors walking around. It also forced me to think creatively, which I really love.

Their wedding ceremony was at the FIRST PARISH UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH in Scituate, which Brittany's uncle officiated. I love it when couples choose someone they know and trust to conduct their wedding- it makes everything more personal and fun for the whole crowd. In lieu of programs, all the wedding guests held ribbons which they waved around as they cheered for Brittany and John as they exited the church.

The couple made their get-away in "the woody" (her uncle's aptly-named vintage Chrysler Town & Country) and they headed toward the water for portraits. The whole area is very nostalgic for them- Brittany even mentioned that the rocks we were climbing during their sunset session was actually where she would run away to as a kid when she needed to be alone and enjoy nature.

Brittany and John are both planners and very organized, so it's no surprise everything looked stunning down to every detail- from the florals to the sail cloth reception tent. Brittany played a lead role in the decor, and let me tell you- not just anyone can take hot pink and coastal vibes and make it work so seamlessly! They both had their own wants for the day, and knew it was important to make all major decisions together and to be patient with each other.

Their advice to engaged couples planning a wedding is to make time for each other to feel connected along the way. They took dance lessons together, and their first dance ended up being John's favorite part of the day- after so much practice, they were so happy to have pulled it off! They also did pre-marriage counseling leading up to the wedding, and got a couple's massage and date night the week before! These two did it RIGHT, and I'm so excited for their future together!
